Unraveling the unexpected roles of primase-polymerases in genome replication and repair

To counteract DNA damage and maintain genome stability, cells have evolved a myriad of strategies for repairing and bypassing specific genetic lesions. This seminar will explore our current understand of how, potentially lethal, DNA double-strand breaks are repaired and describe the mechanisms employed by the cellular end-joining apparatus to co-ordinate this process. He will also discuss how studies on DNA break repair polymerases led to the identification of distinct damage tolerance primase-polymerases (PrimPols) that assist DNA replication, defining novel lesion bypass pathways that maintain genome stability in response to replicative stress in cells.
